POLAR BEAR SAFETY COURSE
OVERVIEW The arctic safety course is an entry-level course for people who work, guide or supervise individuals in the arctic that could come into contact with polar bears. This course is intended to teach participants a non-lethal approach to encounters with polar bears. The course covers topics that include bear behavior and habitat, weapons handling (rifle, handgun and deterrent weapons), shooting exercises, mental marksmanship, and perimeter systems.

Objectives
- Develop a sense of confidence and necessary skills for personnel working in polar bear inhabited regions
- Develop ability to assess and respond to threatening situations
- Familiarize and train in utilization of standard and specialized bear deterrents
- Have good knowledge and understanding of polar bear facts and behaviour
- Reinforce how to safely handle and transport firearms
- Safely operate different types of firearms
- Safely set up and utilize different types of perimeter systems
- Understand and practice safe travel and camping in polar bear inhabited areas
Who Should Take This Course? This course is designed for anyone who works or does recreational activities in a geographical location where polar bears are known to inhabit. These include Outdoors Guides, Scientists and Researchers, Industry Workers (Mining & Gas), and Adventurers.
Prerequisites Participants must be 18 years of age, have their Restricted Possession and Acquisition License (PAL), and have basic snowmobile/ATV operation experience. All participants must complete liability and medical release waivers.
Course Format The course is taught over three days with the first day being an orientation to the training and location followed by course theory. Days two and three will include practical application of theory and methods. To provide the personal touch and the best possible instruction, maximum students in this course is set to 10.
