Welcome to the November edition of the AK newsletter!
The days are getting shorter, the nights longer, and the 2009 arctic season is now behind us. Which means that we are in the thick of planning and preparing for 2010 and 2011's wildlife trips, as well as exciting new over-land/ice exploratory trips for next year. I just got off the phone with one of our senior guides, Jake, who lives with his wife Sipporah in Pond Inlet. He tells me it's -31C, and the bay outside his window is freezing over. The sun rises at 8:30 and sets at 16:30 – quite different from the balmy June days of 24-hour sunshine and watching whales in a t-shirt!
All of us at Arctic Kingdom, including the northern communities and Inuit guides we work with, are really looking forward to the 2010 spring and summer trips! The three departures for the Narwhal and Polar Bear Floe Edge Adventure are almost full – if you are considering coming in 2010, book a spot soon as all three trips, including the scuba dive trip departing May 31st and the two non-dive trips on June 7 and June 15 will soon be sold out.
If you haven't seen it yet, check out this blog post of mine that summarizes some of my Top 10 moments on this trip – 2009 TOP 10 FLOE EDGE MOMENTS.
Introducing: The "Land-tamer"...the what?
If you've met our founder Graham, you'll know that he's always looking for new ways to address the unique challenges of the Arctic, making it easier to access, cross, navigate and explore. Hence the Land-Tamer, the newest addition to our fleet of Arctic vehicles. You might almost consider it an “Arctic RV,” but, well, “Land-Tamer” seemed like a cooler name for this 8-wheeled amphibious vehicle. It has a polar bear-proof, transparent cabin, seats seven, sleeps four, has a three-meter viewing tower, a water propulsion system, winch, ramps to cross cracks in the ice – and, well, it can go over ice, cross open water, and pull lots of gear. Graham commissioned this vehicle and sent it by sea-lift to Grise Fiord – Canada's most northerly community, with a population of 161 – so that we might travel quickly, comfortably, and safely as we penetrate into the Arctic's most remote areas in pursuit of incredible wildlife -- as we will on our exploratory trip to Bear Bay (see next article).

NEW Exploratory Trip: Polar Bears of Devon Islands 'Bear Bay' by Land-tamer
Announcing a new exploratory trip for polar bears in April 21-29, 2010!
Bear Bay, on the north side of Devon Island, is famous among local Inuit and Canadian Wildlife Service for its many polar bears. We will explore Bear Bay and ‘live' in polar bear country in the comfort and safety of the heated 'Land Tamer,' capturing some great new images of polar bears. We'll be departing from Grise Fiord and ultimately traveling on to Resolute. This will be an historical exploratory trip in three respects:
- It will be our first expedition utilizing the Land-Tamer – an event 3 years in the making!
- Crossing the over 250 km of sea ice and land from Grise Fiord to Resolute will be a major feat, never before attempted by an amphibious vehicle!
- We'll be heading into and living in polar bear country, photographing the polar bears in their natural environment from a self-contained, heated vehicle.
This trip is brand new, and will be open to only three persons outside the AK expedition team. Contact Thomas at adventures@arctickingdom.com or click here for more details >>

Our new video gallery’s got all that and more, including some fun 'extra' clips of memorable encounters with a swimming polar bear and a friendly bowhead whale. Disney Nature and Galatée Films present: OCEANS - the Film
We can't wait to see this epic movie, and want to you to be the first to know about it.
We worked 'behind the scenes' on this film for almost two years, but it's a whole other experience seeing what Galatée Film’s Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzard (Winged Migration) have made. This is going to be a film of tremendous proportions, documenting the alien grandeur of life in the ocean in over 167 locations around the world. Some of the world's most experienced underwater cinematographers risked their lives, diving in the jaws of predatory sharks and amid a frenzy of birds diving to feed on deep-water fishes to capture life beneath the ocean in a way never before experienced.
We worked with the producers and cameramen of Galatée Films throughout the Arctic, scouting locations for the best sites for filming Narwhal, Beluga, and Walrus, and ultimately helping them get the shots they needed for this film. Check out their beautiful website at www.oceans-lefilm.com, and search under “Medias” to find footage from the arctic regions. The film will be released by Disney Nature on Earth Day 2010 – mark your calendars!

AK Adventurer Profile: Robyn Mulgrew
When folks are considering coming on one of our wildlife expeditions, they often wonder: Who else will be on the trip? It's a great question, as you'll get to know your fellow adventurers quite well. We decided that the best way to answer this question would be to let some of the people coming along on our expeditions introduce themselves! So we asked Robyn Mulgrew, coming on the June 15-22, 2010 Narwhal and Polar Bear Floe Adventure to tell us a little about herself:
"My name is Robyn Mulgrew and I come from Auckland, New Zealand.
We often holiday pretty close to home in the Pacific Islands, Fiji in particular where snorkelling amongst the coral, tropical fish and turtles is fantastic, rather different from snorkelling in the Arctic I suspect!
We are also close to the Antarctic, although it is difficult to get down there other than by cruise ship. My father was an explorer and a member of Sir Edmund Hillary’s Antarctic expedition which located a position and built Scott Base, the New Zealand Government Base on Ross Island, East Antarctica in 1956.
I subsequently have a natural interest in and have travelled to Antarctica twice, spending many a day photographing and enjoying penguins, whales, seals, albatross and the various historic huts from the Heroic Era of Antarctic exploration.
My mountaineer father also instilled in me a huge interest in the Himalayas and the Sherpa’s of Nepal. As a member of the Himalayan Trust which has primarily built schools and hospitals for the Sherpa people of the Solu Khumbu for the last 45 years, I have spent a great deal of time trekking in Nepal and then eventually travelling down through India where for 20 years I sourced old doors and architectural pieces to stock a retail business operating out of Auckland, Wellington and Newport Beach, California.
One thing we don't see much of down here is Polar Bears! My Arctic Kingdom Adventure seems to be the perfect opportunity to get reasonably close to the Arctic wildlife in a quiet, unobtrusive manner. With so much experience in photograph expeditions I am sure we will experience some amazing sights"
Thanks Robyn – looking forward to seeing you at the floe edge!

Canada Goose Store - Gently Used?
In our last newsletter, we announced a sale on our “gently-used” Canada Goose attire. Some of you have asked what, exactly, 'gently used' means. One way I like to describe it is to imagine yourself putting on a new jacket, rolling on the ground twice, then dusting yourself off and dry-cleaning it. The clothing still looks pretty much brand new: There are no tears, no stains, and often times you can't tell the difference between the jacket and one fresh from the store. We are offering this gear at a fraction of the new price in order to make room for new inventory for next year. And if you want a brand-new Canada Goose product, we can do that for you as well!
Check out the store here and call/email us.
