Feeding

The narwhal feeds on a wide range of creatures, including squid, shrimp and arctic cod as well as molluscs and other crustaceans. The narwhal's flexible neck gives it an added advantage while hunting, and they have been known to forage at a wide range of depths. While foraging, Narwhals use echolocation to pinpoint their prey. They have been observed feeding intensively in the spring, searching for food along ice edges and in cracks in the ice. Because thick ice and dark waters obscure winter viewing conditions, nothing is known about narwhal's winter feeding habits.
