Pack Ice
Gregarious and social, Walrus congregate in herds ranging from a few to hundreds of animals. During the winter months, Walrus pods gather along the pack ice that forms atop the open sea. In summer, when the ice retreats toward the pole, Walrus bask on rocky outcrops and along the ice floe, their skin turning rosy as their blood vessels dilate to keep their bodies cool. Despite the warmth, these massive creatures gravitate together, often lying on top of one another in large heaps.
