Close cousin to the Beluga whale, the Narwhal is much more shy and elusive than the friendly and adaptable Beluga. In summer months, the whales move closer to the coast, frequenting the waters in Lancaster Sound, off the east coast of Greenland and around the Svalbard archipelago. Traveling in pods ranging from ten and up to a hundred whales, Narwhal are often found in the company of other Arctic whales, feeding in the water along the floe edge in summer, and migrating out into the open sea during the cold winter months.
