Coats Island - Nunavut
A designated reindeer reserve since 1920, Coats Island is also home to a significant population of shore birds, including the Thick-billed Murre, the largest surviving member of the auk family. These black and white birds nest along the island's northern cliffs, laying their single eggs directly on the cliff ledge. Pods of Walrus often haul out of the ice-cold waters along the cliff base, resting themselves on the sun-warmed rocks.
