Igloolik - Nunavut
Located on a small island of the same name in the northern Foxe Basin, the town of Igloolik is surrounded by seas swarming with marine life -- primarily walrus, seals and whales. This rich hunting ground has sustained Arctic peoples for millennia, and numerous archeological sites throughout the island show hunting activity dating as far back as 2500 BCE. The modern day hamlet is one of the most traditional in Nunavut, its native population, the Iglulungmiut, nurturing the settlement's deep roots on the island. Subsistence hunting and fishing still play a major role in everyday life, though the town has embraced the changes brought by modernization, including satellite phone and internet, and television and radio reception.
