Unique Characteristics

The Bowhead's survival is dependant on their ability to travel through ice-dominated waters. The bowheads' ability to make long underwater dives is almost mythical. Scientists have recorded dives lasting that up to seventeen minutes, but ice fisherman and aboriginal tribes have reported dives lasting forty minutes or more.

When no breathing holes are available, bowheads are capable of breaking through ice up to twenty centimetres thick with their strong skulls. The body of an adult Bowhead will often display several scars accrued from smashing themselves against the ice.
