Communication

Bowhead whales are very vocal. They have a large repertoire of underwater calls and songs that are used to communicate while travelling, feeding and socializing. Bowheads vocalize in turn (The Lives of Whales and Dolphins, p 77), each letting the other finish its song before piping up. Scientist believe that, in dark arctic waters, whales must listen closely to one another in order to be aware of each other's whereabouts and of any potential threats.
