ARCTIC CIRCLE TO THE FIORDS OF BAFFIN ISLAND SNOWMOBILE ADVENTURE - TRIP 2

Overview | Itinerary | Trip Notes | Gallery

OVERVIEW

The east coast of Baffin Island is characterized by many fiords, some of which have 1000+ m vertical cliffs that are among the most dramatic in the world. Inuit travel, camp, and hunt in these fiords and fish in the rivers that run into inland lakes and glaciers. The sea ice is an important platform for Inuit hunting and traveling.

Starting just north of the Arctic Circle from the Inuit community of Qikiqtarjuaq, we head towards some of Baffin Island's most stunning scenery - the uncountable fiords that run the entire length of the eastern coast of Baffin Island. We'll see the Penny Ice Cap, the only remaining legacy of the great ice sheets that once covered North America, travel past huge glaciers that end at the sea ice ice. At the halfway point we re-fuel in Clyde River - Polar Bear Capital of Nunavut, and onto the famous floe edges of Pond Inlet where sometimes hundreds of Narwhal whales will be feeding and resting. Once again this trip is a fantastic mix of huge ice, mountains, icebergs, abundant wildlife and overall... big adventure.

  • Kivatoo - an abandoned settlement
